The advantages are obvious but it demonstrates as well the importance of sound digital security as we move towards a society where even these kind of life-dependant systems are online.

Everybody realises that keeping the biggest network provider of the country up and running is vital. But do we exactly know its importance? What would happen when this network would be distributed? Can other networks take the hit or would this cause a chain reaction? Since I have been photographing Cyber Security I have asked this question to many experts, all say it would cause a massive chain reaction but nobody can tell exactly what will happen. We can only speculate but not calculate what would happen.


This for me underlines to importance of solid digital security but also that we as a society realise how dependant one part is of the internet is on the other.

Which is a nice word for what in reality are huge buildings with endless rows of servers using a massive amount of energy, as the IT sector is responsible for roughly the same amount of Co2 emissions as the airline industry.

This building on this picture is Google’s Datacenter in the North of The Netherlands which is set for an expansion the coming years, brining the total investments of this center to € 1,5 billion. This is said to be the first of Google’s datacenters to run for 100% on renewable energy.

So next time when you search for something on Google or check your Gmail chances are that a server in this building is set to work.
